CureCancerStarter Launched to Raise Funds to Fight Cancer

Cure Cancer StarterCureCancerStarter, a 501c3 nonprofit, launched today.  The site will connect cancer patients, their friends and family to cancer researchers.  The site features cancer research from the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (Chapel Hill, NC), The Duke Cancer Institute (Durham, NC), Roswell Park Cancer Institute (Buffalo, NY) and the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center (Madison, WI) with plans to extend to other cancer research centers soon.

CURECANCERSTARTER.ORG SMITHCureCancerStarter was created by cancer survivor Martin Smith and Raleigh web and software developers Atlantic BT. CureCancerStarter is FREE for federally designated cancer centers and cancer patients, their friends and family to use. All site creation costs are being paid by Smith and Atlantic BT as a payback and pay forward “Thank You” to cancer researchers and great cancer care institutions.

Cancer Centers upload information including videos about groundbreaking cancer research to CureCancerStarter.org so patients and donors can “see inside the lab” for the first time.

“The Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) is happy to partner with Cure Cancer Starter as we transform cancer care,” said Erin Tait, Director Community Engagement, Duke Cancer Institute.

Crowdfunding cancer research sprang into Smith’s mind when his oncologist Dr. Hank van Deventer shared how his recent cancer research NIH application for fibrocyte research was turned down during one of Smith’s 18 rounds of chemotherapy. Dr.van Deventer’s fibrocyte research is one of the first cancer research campaigns shared on CureCancerStarter.org.

Eli Jordfald“We are excited to collaborate with Marty and Cure Cancer Starter as we work toward our ultimate goal of making cancer curable,” said Eli Jordfald, Major Gifts Director, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.

“Creating a crowdfunding platform for cancer research is an exciting project,” said Mark Foulkrod, Atlantic BT’s President, “and we care about Martin so we were glad to help fund one of the first websites dedicated to cancer research.”

Atlantic BT is working on crowdfunding applications for other customers too.

“With CureCancerStarter we promote our cutting-edge research on a global platform to cancer fighters from across America. This partnership helps further Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s commitment to cure cancer,” said Cindy Eller, Executive Director, Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

“The University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center is excited to partner with CureCancerStarter.org. The future of cancer care will be transformed by unique multidisciplinary partnerships and our future looks very promising,” said Kelly Sitkin, Director of Development, Carbone Cancer Center.

Cure Cancer Starter ProjectsCrowdfunding, or smaller donations from many web visitors, is a new idea sure to help cancer research centers with new funding as traditional cancer funding is cut or reduced.

“You never feel more alone than the day you hear ‘cancer’ and your name in the same sentence,” explained Smith.

Cancer patients aren’t alone because they have friends, family and great cancer research and care institutions such as UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Duke Cancer Institute, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Carbone Cancer Center at theUniversity of Wisconsin working hard with CureCancerStarter to cure cancer in our lifetime.
