Hong Kong Launches Greater Bay Area AI Education Initiative to Drive Global Leadership in EdTech

UBTECH Education, in partnership with the Centre for Information Technology in Education (CITE) under the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Education, has formally launched the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) Artificial Intelligence Education Development Initiative.

The program is set to transform AI education across the region and position Hong Kong as a global hub for AI-integrated learning and talent development.

The launch event was themed “AI Empowers Future Education, Technology Drives Innovation in the Greater Bay Area.” It included the inauguration of the Artificial Intelligence Education & Teacher Development Center and brought together academic leaders, education policymakers, and technology experts from across the region.

The initiative aims to create a robust AI education infrastructure across the GBA, starting with the launch of the Greater Bay Area AI School Alliance.

The alliance supports Hong Kong’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI into the school curriculum. Currently, 82% of primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong have adopted AI modules, with the government targeting 95% coverage by 2025.

The AI curriculum, embedded within the ICT syllabus for Secondary 1 to 3, includes 10 to 14 hours of mandatory AI education.

UBTECH and CITE’s collaboration is focused on training a new generation of AI-fluent educators through localized and global professional development programs.

The partnership will also create AI demonstration labs in schools, build research and education centers across Hong Kong, and roll out a global AI talent certification network reaching more than 100 countries.

These efforts aim to connect K-12 and vocational learners with emerging opportunities in AI, contributing to the Belt and Road Initiative and broader international cooperation in digital learning.

Highlighting the power of embodied AI in education, the event featured Tien Kung, the world’s first humanoid robot to complete a half-marathon.

Developed by UBTECH and deployed in leading Chinese institutions, Tien Kung will now support experiential and STEM learning in Hong Kong.

The company’s new instructional framework, “Embodied Intelligence Empowering Science Education and Innovation,” will be integrated into public school systems to promote hands-on, real-world applications of AI.

The program also supports Hong Kong’s innovation and technology roadmap by enhancing workforce readiness and enabling cross-border talent mobility in AI-related fields.

A roundtable at the launch brought together participants from HKU, the education sector, and industry to discuss the future of AI education and its international scalability.
