National Bank of Oman Launches Digital Account Opening Amid Mobile Banking Push

The National Bank of Oman (NBO) has launched a fully digital account opening feature on its mobile app, allowing users to open accounts without visiting a branch or submitting physical documents, as part of its broader shift toward mobile-first banking services.

The app-based feature enables individuals to open savings, current, children’s, or youth accounts remotely, with users receiving their account numbers immediately after successful registration.

The onboarding process includes digital identity verification through facial recognition, ID scanning, and electronic signatures. Debit cards are delivered to the customer’s address.

The system is supported by integration with Ma’laa, Oman’s Credit and Financial Information Centre, for real-time electronic Know Your Customer (E-KYC) checks, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

The paperless process allows customers to complete onboarding in minutes and access their accounts anytime.

NBO is offering up to 600 reward points for new digital users—100 points for app registration and 500 upon joining the NBO Rewards Program.

Eligible customers can earn up to 3.25% profit on savings accounts.

The launch underscores NBO’s ongoing investment in digital services aimed at improving customer convenience and reducing reliance on traditional branch networks.

It comes amid growing competition in Oman’s retail banking sector, where digital transformation has become central to banks’ efforts to streamline operations and attract younger, tech-savvy customers.

Banks across the Gulf region have accelerated their adoption of digital platforms in recent years to meet rising consumer expectations, cut operational costs, and expand service availability beyond physical channels.

NBO’s latest move signals its intent to strengthen its digital capabilities while enhancing customer onboarding experiences. The service is available 24/7, giving users access to a range of banking transactions from their mobile devices.
