BNPL Fintech Klarna Announces Relaunch of Laybuy in New Zealand

Klarna, the AI-powered payments and commerce network, announced the relaunch of Laybuy in New Zealand.

The launch combines a Kiwi brand with the expertise of BNPL Fintech Klarna.

With over 93 million active users and 675,000 retailers across 26 markets, Klarna’s platform will aim to enhance Laybuy, “making shopping smarter and safer for Kiwi consumers, while helping merchants grow.”

David Sykes, Chief Commercial Officer at Klarna, said:

“Laybuy has been a significant part of New Zealand’s retail ecosystem, and its re-launch under Klarna builds on that foundation. Klarna’s capability and global reach enhance Laybuy’s offerings, ensuring a platform that prioritises innovation, reliability, and the needs of Kiwi merchants and consumers. Through the re-launch we’re helping to reignite the retail economy and strengthen New Zealand’s BNPL sector with innovation, competition, and support for local businesses.”

Laybuy’s relaunch is gaining momentum, “with many of New Zealand’s brands—like Mix and Match, PB Tech, Postie, and Designer Wardrobe—bringing Laybuy back to their checkouts, providing shoppers with smarter ways to pay.

As stated in the update, Laybuy by Klarna will be available “at online checkouts, with plans to add in-store payments later this year.”

Gary Rohloff, Head of Australia and New Zealand for Klarna and former Co-founder and CEO of Laybuy added:

“The re-launch of Laybuy, supported by a global business with the scale and strength of Klarna, represents a milestone for the BNPL market in New Zealand. Klarna’s technology and global reputation allow us to elevate Laybuy to a platform that meets the highest standards of security, flexibility, and reliability.”

Consumers can manage their purchases directly through the Klarna app, gaining access “to personalized insights, payment reminders, and smart budgeting tools.”

With no hidden fees, Laybuy by Klarna gives users the “flexibility they want, backed by the security and transparency they expect.”

As part of its relaunch in New Zealand, Laybuy by Klarna has partnered with Airwallex to streamline the onboarding process, “making it faster and easier for Kiwi retailers to start offering Laybuy at checkout.”

Lowry Gladwell, Associate Director, Airwallex New Zealand said:

“Our partnership with Klarna highlights Airwallex’s dedication to bring NZ retailers the best in payments technology. We’re excited to support Kiwi businesses via Airwallex Checkout that enables new ways to get paid, such as LayBuy by Klarna. Adding new payment methods enhances customer satisfaction and helps merchants grow by increasing conversion rates at the point of sale. This collaboration will ensure that local businesses can thrive in a more accessible and customer-focused financial ecosystem.”

Laybuy by Klarna is reportedly powered by Klarna’s fraud prevention systems, real-time affordability checks, and “a robust infrastructure that ensures compliance with strict global regulatory standards.”

Sykes added:

“We are very pleased to have Gary onboard and leading Laybuy by Klarna. He brings a unique understanding of the local market and BNPL space and is the perfect choice to steer the ship as we bring this trusted Kiwi brand back to life, powered by Klarna’s global scale and AI-driven technology.”
