Last week, California technology company, Keyboardio, took to crowdfunding giant Kickstarter with a mission to raise $120,000 for its new unique keyboard, the Model 01.
The Model 01 consists of a hardwood body, mechanical switches and custom-sculpted keycaps. It’s described as “a keyboard for uncompromising typists.” The company shared:
“We mill the Model 01’s enclosure from two blocks of solid maple that are a joy to rest your hands on. Instead of shallow, uncomfortable keyswitches, we use gloriously tactile mechanical keyswitches similar to those found in the original Apple II. We’ve custom-sculpted each of the 64 individual keycaps on the Model 01 to gently guide your fingers to the right keys. After putting it all together, the result is a keyboard that is a pleasure to type on all day and all night.”
Features of the Model 01 include:
- Heirloom-grade construction: The company created the keyboard out of two blocks of maple.
A key layout based on fingers: The keyboard is based on the default key layout of QWERTY. Keyboardio aligned the keys in columns to make it easier to reach without having to contort fingers.
- It adjusts to fit hands and desks: The Model 01 provides comfort by having to halves that join together by a center bar.
- Fully programmable LEDs: Independent programmable RBG LEDs have been placed underneath each key on the keyboard (yes, these can be turned off).
Quiet, clicky mechanical keyswitches: The quick click switches were designed in Canada by Edgar Matias.
- True N-key rollover: The NKRO-ove-USB technique being used works great for Windows, MacOS X, and Linux.
The price for a single Model 01 keyboard is $299 (2 are $549). A limited edition Model 01 is also being offered for the price of $999.
Since its launch, the Model 01 Kickstarter has successfully raised nearly $315,000 thanks to over 1,000 backers. It is set to close on July 15th.
