Overfunding: Mental Health Digital Enablers Startup Thalamos Quickly Surpasses £250,000 Funding Target on Seedrs

Thalamos, a UK-based startup that creates digital enablers for mental health, has successfully secured its initial £250,000 equity crowdfunding target on Seedrs. Founded in 2018, Thalamos stated its mission is to empower health and social care professionals with technology to improve mental health outcomes.

From a base of personal experience, the first challenge we wanted to address was the Mental Health Act (MHA). Admission to hospital under the Mental Health Act is often referred to as “being sectioned”. This emergency care pathway is how someone with an acute mental illness, who is a harm to themselves or other people, receives access to healthcare.”

Thalamos further explained that the process is an entirely paper-based and hugely complicated legal process. It also involves relatives, social workers, doctors, nurses and sometimes even the police and courts. It can be slow, complicated, distressing, and prone to errors. Between 2016 and 2019, over 1,000 people were unlawfully detained, which we view as a result of the paper process.

“Thalamos delivers an off-the-shelf software as-a-service to NHS Trusts, Local Authorities and Private Mental Healthcare providers. New customers are able to sign-up using their professional registration numbers. These are automatically checked against the Department of Health and Social Care to ensure users have the appropriate approvals.”

Funds from the Seedrs round will be used to continue the work and development of the Thalamos technology. The company is now offering 11.02% at a £2.2 million pre-money valuation. The funding round is set to close at the end of September.
