Apple Announces CryptoKit Tools as Framework in Swift at WWDC

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is going crypto, so it seems.

This week Apple held its annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) sharing all of their forthcoming software updates along with a super expensive, high powered Mac Pro.

During one of the many developer sessions, Apple announced a new “CryptoKit” for developers.

As described by Apple, CryptoKit is:

Cryptography and Your Apps

System frameworks encrypt both data at rest and data in transit in a transparent way for you. This functionality is available by simply setting an attribute. However, you may want to do more to protect your users’ data. CryptoKit is a new Swift framework that makes it easier and safer than ever to perform cryptographic operations, whether you simply need to compute a hash or are implementing a more advanced authentication protocol.

CryptoKit is said to free apps from “managing raw pointers, and automatically handles tasks that make your app more secure, like overwriting sensitive data during memory deallocation.”

A video of the CryptoKit presentation is not yet available but should be soon.

The move by Apple really makes sense. The demand for crypto focused products is on the rise – and not just for financial services. The fact that erstwhile competitors are moving in the same direction is something Apple management is keenly aware of.

It will be interesting to see how CryptoKit is utilized and, perhaps, what Apple itself has in store.
