JJ Watt’s popular YouCaring initiative Houston Flood Relief Fund has successfully secured $31 million from more than 200,000 donors. The campaign was launched just after the Texas city was hit by Hurricane Harvey at the end of August.The Texans football player kicked off the fund with a personal contribution of $100,000. He stated:
“The recovery efforts after Hurricane Harvey are going to be massive, and many people will need our help to get back on their feet. It’s extremely difficult to have to watch the events unfold on TV and not be able to get back to Houston to help – but hopefully this fundraiser will help show our love and support to those who need it the most right now. Any donation that you can spare, no matter how large or small, no matter what city or state you live in, is greatly appreciated.”
Watt also wrote:
“Hurricane Harvey has taken a catastrophic toll on our great city, while leaving many stranded and in need of assistance. We must come together and collectively help rebuild the aspects of our community members lives that were damaged or lost. Any donation that you can spare, no matter how large or small, is greatly appreciated. We will come out of this stronger than ever. We are Texans.”
Others who have donated to the cause include Jimmy Fallon and the crew from The Tonight Show sent $1 million, Ellen DeGeneres with Walmart gave $1 million, YouCaring offered up $50,000, Drake gave $200,000, and Charles Butt, CEO of H-E-B, pitched $5 million. The campaign will be closing this Friday (September 15th).
