Supporters Raise $225,000 on GoFundMe For Charlottesville Protest Victim

Following Saturday’s devastating situation in Charlottesville, Virginia, supporters took to crowdfunding platform GoFundMe to raise $225,000 for the victim Heather Heyer.

Heyer was the only victim killed when a man drove his car through a crowd of counter-protesters during the Unite the Right” rally near the University of Virginia. The rally, which started on Friday evening, was in response to the university removing the statue of famous Confederate Army general, Robert E. Lee, from its campus. Counter-protesters arrived on Saturday to stand by the university’s decision. Heyer was among the 20 people hurt and the driver has since been apprehended by police.

Felicia Venita Correa, a friend of Heyer, created the GoFundMe after Heyer was identified as the lone victim in the incident. Correa shared that Heyer was a native of the Charlottesville area, was a paralegal for Miller Law Group, and dedicated to social justice. The funds from the campaign were set to go towards Heyer’s family and funeral expenses.

The campaign was closed after it raised the $225,000. GoFundMe confirmed in a Facebook post on Monday that the initiative was verified.
