Kickstarter-Funded “Mystery Science Theater 3000” Reboot Receives Netflix Premiere Date

Joel Hodgson, the creator of the sci-fi cult TV series, Mystery Science Theater 3000, announced on Wednesday that the show’s reboot finally received its Netflix premiere date, which is April 14th.

This news comes less than two years after the show secured $5,764,229 from 48,270 backers through its Kickstarter campaign.  Hodgson launched the initiative with a mission to raise as much funds as he could to reboot Mystery Science Theater 3000. The original $2 million campaign goal would fund three full-length episodes, and $5.5 million would fund a season of 12 episodes.

In a recent update, Hodgson stated:

You know, I always promised that I’d tell you as soon as I found out, and Netflix actually just told me as we were finishing the Q&A session for our screening here in Los Angeles. So, I wanted to write and tell you right away. Anyway, I’m off to meet some of the wonderful backers who came out for tonight’s screening, but I wanted to make sure you heard the news from me before you see it somewhere else. I’ll have more news for you soon. And just so you don’t worry, we promise: if your rewards include the new episodes – or the livestream screening of the first new episode — we’ll make sure you have them by April 14, when the new episodes premiere on Netflix.”

Showing its excitement for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 news, Netflix shared on Facebook the premiere date and a new cast photo.
