Kickstarter-Funded VR Headset Fove to Ship Next Week

FOVE 3

Creators of the virtual reality headset, FOVE, is set to ship the Kickstarter-funded to backers as early as next week. The product successfully secured $480,650 from 1,480 backers.

FOVE 4The description of FOVE reads, “Immerse yourself in virtual worlds that react to your eyes and emotions. Experience precision control at the speed of thought.” With the device, users can do the following:

  • Aim With Eyes: Simply target, aim and shoot with true line-of-sight targeting
  • Focus Your Vision: View realistic scenery that blurs and sharpens, reaching to where you are focusing.
  • Make Eye Contact: Look, laugh, and communicate with virtual characters just like in the real world.
  • Move Naturally: Tilt your head to reduce simulation sickness by reducing the need for unnatural head movements.

The Fove team noted:

“Fove’s industrial design is new and improved. In our efforts to make Fove lighter, smaller, and better, the headset’s form-factor has been refined and enhanced, resulting in better stability, increased performance, and a substantially more comfortable experience. Instead of the elastic material used in our initial headset prototypes, we’re upgrading FOVE with ratcheting, articulated clasps to enable the headset to adapt to any head form. The rear-end velcro tapes will be replaced with a dial-style adjustment to easily tighten the device. Then, with multiple flexible materials on the side, the headset will be naturally adjusted to the size and shape of your head.”

Features of Fove include convert titles quickly with easy conversion; add eye tracking to existing content; more graphics power with foveated rendering (in progress); power C++ API with C# (mono) wrappers; and hands-on support with tutorials, sample code, with FOVE forum.

In the latest update, the company stated:

FOVE 1“Fove 0 is ready to ship and the headsets will depart from our factory January 8. Behind all these Kickstarter updates is our amazing team that has grown from 11 to 25 full-time employees this year. With this team of amazing people we will take on new challenges and work our hardest to make 2017 the year VR really takes off.”

Yuka Kojima, co-founder and CEO of Fove, reportedly shared with Yahoo!:

“This is the culmination of a two-and-a-half year adventure. We started FOVE as a small team back in 2014, and now we’re finally realizing an entirely new way for humans to interact with a virtual.”

Following the Kickstarter campaign, Fove secured $11 million during a Series A round led by Colopl VR Fund with participation from Hon Hai Venture Capital Fund, Silicon Valley early-stage VC firm 2020 and Samsung Venture Investment.
