SpeedX, the tech company whose Leopard smart bike raised $2,319,876 on Kickstarter, is back on Kickstarter with the Unicorn, its latest luxe smart road bike. Available on Kickstarter starting at $3199, the Unicorn has already surpassed its goal within 75 minutes, having raised over $208,990 from over 57 backers.
“Behind the scenes we were already working on the SpeedX Unicorn for more than a year. To see success this quick is beyond our imagination. We’ve put more work in this than all of our other products combined,” wrote SpeedX Chief Marketing Officer Raggy Lau via email. “Personally I think that gathering emails is more important than the Kickstarter launch itself. You need to create a cult before you launch and keep them updated. It is that simple. This is your key to reach your Kickstarter goal in no time, like the SpeedX Unicorn campaign.”
In 2014 cycling enthusiasts Tony Li and Jam Gao started SpeedX, hoping to bring hi-tech changes to the bike. They first released an app for cycling enthusiast that proved immediately popular, almost one million users to date. The duo’s first crowdfunding effort was a bike computer that turned normal bikes into smart bikes (raised 450K on Indiegogo). In March 2016, SpeedX launched its smart bike, the Leopard, which became the most funded bike project on Kickstarter with over US$2.3 million.
“With SpeedX, we have found a fine balance between the bike’s performance and its price, which means making the smart road bike affordable for most people,” added Lau. “If you compare our bike with same configuration bike from the market, ours costs half as much. And our bikes are much smarter than others. Also, we have focused on the online business which avoids the agency system and brings the best price to the customer directly.”
