In less than two weeks, Polygons, the origami-inspired flat 4-in-1 spoon, is performing beyond measure on its Kickstarter campaign, having already surpassed $500K stretch goal. At this writing the flat spoon has raised over $542,000 from over 19,432 backers… the stats increase with each click… quite a surprise perhaps given Polygons Design’s puny initial $10,000 goal. That ol’ goal? Secured in an hour. New stretch goals were quickly posted by the team for the $12 eyecandy measuring spoon, most recently for every $25,000 beyond $500K a new color would be introduces. There are now blue Polygons available with red and green waiting in the wings.
Now about the eco-friendly product. The clean, flat design makes sense for storage and travel. It’s easy to clean and measures dry, vicious and liquid ingredients. Yes, including honey (but backers may not be as tempted to lick this spoon). Both metric and tablespoon and teaspoon measurements are given, and are available in two different sizes.
Polygons’ designers aimed to create both a durable and eco-friendly design. The hinges of Polygons are made of TPR, which have the property of being able to flex a 100,000 cycles without failure. According to the campaign, “This means, even if you were to use it 25 times a day, every day, the hinges would outlast 10 years! Additionally, by using the 4-in-1 design, Polygons is eliminating the need for excess plastic and metals that traditional measuring spoons use.” As an added bonus, the Polygons spoon can also be used to spread, which helps eliminate clutter in the kitchen drawer and picnic basket. Beware: it can easily fit (and therefore be stowed away) into a back pocket or be used as a bookmark.
Launched in 2014 by Rahul Agarwal, an Indian inventor, designer and teacher, Polygons has already won various design awards and encomiums from many design magazines. Polygons is Agarwal’s first Kickstarter foray.
