Brief: Humans of New York Raises Over $1.2M In Less Than Two Weeks on Geneorsity For Pediatric Cancer Research

Humans of New York

Earlier this month, Humans of New York took to Indiegogo’s Geneorsity platform to raise $1 million for pediatric cancer research. The nonprofit organization teamed up with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for this new project.

Dr. Richard O’ReillyFounder of Human’s of New York, Brandon Stanton stated that key researcher, Dr. Richard O’Reilly, is a leading expert on bone marrow transplants and pioneered an approach that is now used to treat over 2,500 patients annually. He has reportedly helped lead a team of the world’s best doctors, nurses, and researchers in their battle to save lives. Due to Dr. O’Reilly is stepping down this year, and in honor of his service, the organization is raising funds to aid in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Stanton revealed that two-thirds of the campaign’s funds will go towards the research at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The remaining third will be used for psychologically and socially support to the young patients and families as they endure the long, tough battle against the illness. This will include non-medical services such as therapy and travel subsidies. He noted that funding is scarce for pediatric cancer.  Because cancer most often occurs in older populations, pharmaceutical companies are not incentivized to develop treatments for cancers that develop during childhood.

Currently, the campaign is still accepting funds.
