On Monday, crowdfunding platform GoFundMe announced its community has raised over $300,000 for the Fort McMurray fire victims. The fire, which started on May 1st, began in Alberta and has destroy homes and businesses leaving 88,000 people displaced.
Rob Solomon, GoFundMe CEO, stated:
“This fire is wreaking havoc across entire communities, upending families, and displacing tens of thousands of individuals. The GoFundMe community is stepping up and lending a helping hand to those in need. We encourage the GoFundMe community to continue to support everyone affected by this devastating fire.”
Currently, there are a total of 120 campaigns that are dedicated to the fire victims. The funding portal noted the community has a history of coming together when natural disasters strike. Just last month, the community raised over $1.4 million for victims of the Ecuador earthquake. Campaign organizers raised $7 million on GoFundMe in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquakes, $2.5 million for the 2015 California wildfires, and over $1.1 million for the storms in the Carolinas this past year.
