Nearly 100 GoFundMe Campaigns Secure Over $300,000 For Flint’s Water Crisis So Far

Seeking to help the residents of Flint, Michigan during their water crisis, over 8,000 supporters have taken to crowdfunding platform GoFundMe to raise $300,000 for 92 campaigns that are dedicated to the cause.

“Over the past several days, we have seen an outpouring of support from the GoFundMe community in a time of crisis. Thousands of people have rallied together to help the residents of Flint, Michigan, who have been dealing with dangerous levels of lead in their water supply. Many families have been forced to live off of store-bought bottled water, although few can afford it in this community where 40 percent of its residents live in poverty.”

Last weekGoFundMe announced it has launched a crowdfunding contest to help funds for the Flint Water Crisis.

Flint 2“The GoFundMe campaign that raises the most money between 6:00am PT on Friday, January 22, 2016, through 6:00pm PT on Friday, January 29, 2016, to provide clean drinking water to the people of Flint, will receive a $10,000 contribution from GoFundMe.

 

“The winner of the Contest will receive $10,000 toward the winner’s Fundraising Campaign.  Odds of winning are affected by the number of eligible entries received by the Contest Sponsor by the Contest End Date.  The prize will be deposited into the winner’s Fundraising Campaign within one (1) week of the Contest End Date. There is no substitution, cash equivalent or transfer of prizes allowed.  In order to receive a prize, winner may be required to provide proof of identification or eligibility.  All federal, state, and local taxes, if any, are the responsibility of the winner.”

In regards to the winner selection, GoFundMe added:

Flint 1“Within five (5) days of the Contest End Date, the entrant with the Fundraising Campaign that generates the most online donations raised for the Purpose during the Contest Period will be deemed the potential winner and will be notified by the Contest Sponsor via e-mail.  In the event the potential winner does not accept the prize within two (2) business days of notification, the winner is ineligible, or the prize or prize notification is not deliverable, the entrant with the Fundraising Campaign that generates the second most money raised for the Purpose during the Contest Period may be contacted as an alternate winner.  The Contest Sponsor is not responsible for and shall not be liable for late, lost, misdirected or unsuccessful efforts to notify the potential winner(s).”
