John & Hank Green’s Annual Project For Awesome Initiative Captures Over $675,000 on Indiegogo

Project For Awesome 2015 1

Last week, Vlogbrothers hosts John and Hank Green launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds for their annual event, Project For Awesome.

Project for Awesome 2015 2Project for Awesome was started in 2007 when a group of video creators decided it would be good, for one day a year, to take over YouTube in the interest of good. During this event, thousands of people post videos about and advocating for charities that decrease the overall level of “world suck.”

Project for Awesome has three parts, which are the following:

  1. Amazing community members from around the world make videos about a charity that is particularly meaningful for them. These are uploaded to the Project for Awesome website*, but also should be shared around the internet and viewed, discussed, commented upon, etc. Backers can vote on your favorite videos on the P4A site, which helps determine the charities that receive funding. Videos were submitted from 12:00pm EST on December 11th through 11:59am EST on December 13th.
  2. The Greens will have an amazing selection of perks for backers to choose from if you want to donate to the Foundation to Decrease World Suck through our Indiegogo campaign. From digital downloads to signed art, donated items from your favorite YouTube creators and our annual calendar… they’re bound to find something fun. The Indiegogo will be open from 12:00am EST on Wednesday, December 9th to 11:59pm EST on Tuesday, December 15th.
  3. John and Hank, along with a number of special guests, host a 48-hour continuous livestream to feature videos, announce new perks, and look at dollar bills under microscopes… or something like that. Backers never know what will happen.

hank-green-1All funds raised during the first half of Project For Awesome went towards the Save the Children and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.  Money raised during the second half  (now through December 15th) will be divided between the organizations chosen by the community.

Those who contributed to the campaign will receive various perks, including wristbands, book readings, podcasts, and much more. Since its launch last week, the project has successfully raised nearly $680,000 thanks to over 19,000 backers. It is set to close tomorrow evening.
