Three Former Employees of VICE Media Launch Kickstarter to Bring Public Access TV to the Web

In an effort to bring public access TV to the Internet, former employees of VICE media recently launched a Kickstarter for a new independent video-only platform, NYC.TV.

NYC.TVAlexandra Serio, Kareem Rahma, and Max Nelson met while working at VICE Media and decided to create the platform, which is inspired by public access dedicated to creating, promoting and distributing videos.

Notably, NYC.TV is (in a nutshell):

  • A destination for New York City-created videos and originally produced, must-see programming
  • A platform that showcases these videos to help creators gain access to a wider audience
  • An independent development fund financing future work from select creators through native advertising

NYC.TV is consisted various items, including  curated content, original series and one-off shorts, and a content submission forum where users can pitch to NYC.TV.

During a recent interview with Business Insider, the trio chatted about the new platform and what user’s can expect. Ahmed explained:

Max Nelson, Alexandra Serio, and Kareem Ahmed 1“All of us have worked for major media companies and we realize there’s a new phase of production. It used to be pre-production, production, and then post-production and that was all a video maker would have to do. But now there’s a ‘post-post-production,’ which is the work of distributing the film.”

Explaining why the he, Serio, and Ahmed created the platform, Nelson stated:

“We’re not trying to send people to a website specifically, we think that model doesn’t work very well anymore. We’ll have a website for our content to live on, but we’ll also have content where people already go.”

In regards to the importance of user submissions, Serio noted:

TV“The submission model is very important to us. We want to make it clear that you should submit your content, We’re programming for the people, by the people. We’re really there to showcase stories that need to be told that are other people’s babies – we just want to elevate them and create an audience for them.”

The initiative is hoping to capture $50,000 during its crowdfunding run, which is set to close on July 7th.
