With SXSW fest 2015 in full swing, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that 1 in 3 films at the big event were funded by crowdfunding giant, Kickstarter.
According to the media outlet, 28 films that are playing at SXSW were funded by successful Kickstarter campaigns. Each film included four of the ten narrative features in competition and 30% of the fest’s entire competition slate.
The 28 films raised more than $1.7 million from over 23,000 backers. Hal Hartley’s new film Ned Rifle, took home nearly $400,000 while Colin Hanks’ All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records reaches over $92,000.
Kickstarter spokesman, Justin Kazmark shared:
“In part, the strong showing of Kickstarter films at SXSW year after year reflects the truly DIY nature of the festival And, in part, it’s about the interdisciplinary spirit that pervades both of our communities – the mix of music, film and interactive is what animates Kickstarter as well.”
The Hollywood Reporter also shared that while Kickstarter’s popularity continues to grow, SXSW has managed to establish a track record of selecting film projects that have used the crowdfunding method. Last year, the Austin-based fest featured 30 Kickstarter projects.
