Quebec Woman in Hijab Controversy Rejects $52,000 Raised Through GoFundMe Campaign

Last month, a Quebec woman by the name of Rania El-Alloul made headlines when Judge Eliana Marengo dismissed her case against Quebec’s automobile insurance board due to her wearing a hijab in the courthouse.

In an effort to help her, a campaign on GoFundMe was started to help purchase a vehicle for her because she is separated and on welfare. Its description reads:

Rania El-Alloul“Rania El-Alloul was treated deplorably and unfairly.  She was dismissed by Quebec Judge, Eliana Marengo, just for wearing her hijab.  Judge Marengo said “The same rules need to be applied to everyone. I will therefore not hear you if you are wearing a scarf on your head”

“This is not the Canadian way.  Rania’s rights are protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights of Freedoms. Let’s show Rania how welcoming Canadians actually are.  She’s in a bad position made worse by a xenophobic and hateful judge.

“This campaign is to help raise funds to buy Rania a car and also raise  awareness of the issue.  No woman with Hijab or any other religious symbol should be treated differently anywhere, let alone in a court of law. We want to buy a car for her because she is separated and on welfare.  She went to court to try and get her car back.  It was taken because her son drove with a suspended license.

“Any excess funds will be directed to her legal fees or as requested by Ms. El-Alloul.”

Within days, the project raised well over its initial $25,000 goal but in two weeks, it captured over $53,000 thanks to nearly 1,100 donors.

Showing her appreciation for the support, El-Alloul wrote in a letter stating she appreciated the financial support offered by the “generous and warm-hearted campaign,” but then revealed how she plans to not take any of the funds. According to CTV, she stated:

“The awareness raised by this campaign has brought us people from all over, who have offered support to carry this issue forward. As a result, I believe that these funds can be put to better use helping those whose rights have been forfeited and stories left untold.”
