On Monday (March 2nd), NeuroMetrix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NURO) announced the launch of its campaign on global crowdfunding platform, Indiegogo for a new wearable pain relief product, Quell.
Frank McGillin, SVP and General Manager of Consumer Health at NeuroMetrix explained the campaign objective:
“We are new to the consumer wearable category and wanted to seek feedback from the Indiegogo community to help finalize the design and deliver 100% drug free pain relief to millions of people who suffer from chronic pain.”

Quell is also FDA cleared for treatment of chronic pain without a prescription. It uses NeuroMetrix’s proprietary non-invasive neurostimulation technology to provide relief from chronic pain, such as due to diabetes, sciatica, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis. Users of the device will also have the option of using their smartphone to automatically track and personalize their pain therapy.
Here’s how Quell works:
- The device stimulates sensory nerves
- Those sensory nerves carry neural pulses to the brain
- The neural pulses trigger a natural response that blocks pain signals throughout the body
- Then neural pulses trigger a natural response that blocks pain signals throughout your body
The NeuroMetrix team shared, “The Quell device is placed in a breathable, comfortable sport band, and an electrode is snapped onto the back of the device. The Quell band is then wrapped around your upper calf with the electrode in direct contact with your skin. Quell is powerful enough to stimulate the nerves in the upper calf carrying neural pulses to the brain tapping into the body’s natural pain relief response. Endogenous opioids are then released into the spine where pain signals are blocked from your body.
“Since each individual has unique therapy needs and sensitivity levels, Quell is customized through a quick and easy calibration process the first time it’s used. After that, Quell will automatically adjust to your optimal stimulation level for pain relief.”
During the first few hours of the campaign, Quell has received well over $21,000 thanks to nearly 110 backers. It is set to close on April 1st.
