America’s First War Ship Doesn’t Weather Blizzard Juno: Crowdfunding for Tall Ship Providence on GoFundMe

tall ship providenceThis week’s blizzard created havoc in the northeast, an in particular for the Tall Ship Sloop Providence which experienced excessive damage during the storm.  To pay for damage not covered by insurance, Tall Ship Providence Captain/Owner Thorpe Leeson and International Performance Artist Nichole Raab looked to raise 900K on GoFundMe to help set sail Tall Ship Providence again.

tall shipThe History: “Tall Ship Sloop Providence is America’s First War Ship, Rhode Island’s Official Flagship, Tall Ship and Sailing Ambassador.  She has been featured in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean Films and most recently in the film Freedom.  The original Providence is historically famous for her time during the Revolutionary War, having shot down or captured 40 British Ships and sailing the New England ports during the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” shared the campaign.  “Providence was the first command of John Paul Jones and is tied to such significant names as John Brown Esk Hopkins and Abraham Whipple.  The one to one ratio Providence replica was built in 1975 for the bicentennial and was blown to the cold ground January 27, 2015 after many great years of sailing.”

tall shipCampaign backers will receive the following for their donations to the big ship’s rehab:

  • A plaque will be made to live on the ship with the name of each donor to come find upon visiting the Providence once she is relaunched
  • $2,000 – $5,999 a night sleeping on board with 2-10  family or friends
  • $6,000-$8,999  a dock side party with 39 of their closest friends
  • $9,000 and up  a private day of sailing with 39 of their closest friend.
  • Donations beyond will be open for creation and collaboration to support your charity or company – bring them on board!

 

According to the campaign helmed by Tall Ship Providence Captain/Owner Thorpe Leeson and International Performance Artist Nichole Raab, funding will be used to:

  • tall shipProvide physical ship updates insurance will not cover – the updates needed prestorm damage bringing the ship to a complete whole level in unison with the storm damage repairs.
  • Support and secure the people who care for the ship – her team/family/crew who have been with her since her last rescue.
  • Support the development of programing, events, education and community use
  • Aid in recovering lost opportunity and lost time she is out of the water during the high season for repairs.
  • Ensure the Ship’s future beyond dry dock period, including but not limited to maintenance & the abilities to operate the vessel at full capacity and programing as soon as she hits the water
  • Continue the additional unique art on board
  • Create new charters, clients and non-profit collaborations
