Vlogbrothers Hosts Launch The Annual Project For Awesome Campaign on Indiegogo

Project for Awesome 1

Earlier this week, Vlogbrothers hosts Hank and John Green launched Project for Awesome’s annual crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. For those who don’t know about this funding event, Project for Awesome was started in 2007 when a group of video creators decided it would be good, for one day a year, to take over YouTube in the interest of good.

Project for AwesomeHere’s how it works:

  • Video creators all over the world create videos promoting their favorite charities.
  • Video creators & community members donate items for Indiegogo perks.
  • People donate money.
  • The charities featured in the videos that the community collectively decides are the best of the year receive a portion of the proceeds of the Indiegogo campaign. The rest of the the funds go to charities working in global health & education chosen by the board of the Foundation to Decrease World Suck.

John GreenAccording to TubeFilter, John announced there would be a few changes to this year’s campaign. While a portion of the funds will go towards the top ten charities that the viewers chose, the proceeds raised during the first two days will be given to Save the Children and Partners in Health. The web host shared that this division of the funds was created to ensure that “internet trolls” are unable to completely hijack the voting process, make it easier for the deep-pocketed patrons to match funding, and assist a pair of dependable charities that are not represented by popular “YouTubers.”

The donations will go to the two organizations until Saturday (December 13th), which is halfway through the 48-hour Project for Awesome live stream. Fans will then able to vote for the YouTubers who has chosen the charities that they wish to support while also giving to the project’s campaign. This part of the event will run through December 16th, then the total amount will be split among the top ten charities.

Perks from the campaign range from books and books to art and calendars. All perks will be sent out after the campaign closes. Although they will be shipped next week, organizer of the campaign cannot guarantee any physical perks will arrive before Christmas. They will be focusing on shipping out the calendars immediately and then will continue with all perk fulfillment into the new year.

Since its launch, the project’s campaign has raised nearly 118,000 from over 2,600 backers.
