Watch Imogen Heap Demo The Crazy Mi.Mu Musical Glove Now Crowdfunding On Kickstarter

Grammy-winning recording artist Imogen Heap has toured the world and released several hits, known for her melding of airy vocals and digital soundscapes. Now she’s taking that latter bit to a pretty incredible conclusion via a new music making device and, appropriately, a currently-running Kickstarter campaign.

The device is called the Mi.Mu Glove (Pronounced me-mu, as in me music). It certainly brings air drums to life as evidenced by the video. (Rush fans rejoice!) It turns the world around the user into a musical instrument and creates an experience that is half live music show and half performance art, where movements are translated into sound. Watch the demo and explanation below…

The associated Kickstarter has currently raised £34,000 on a goal of £200,000 with 33 days to go. A running history of the project can be found on TheGlovesProject.com, and the device has been in the works for years now as a project at University of the West of England.

mi.muIt isn’t a novel concept by any means, and the campaign page nods to similar devices being available elsewhere. The promise of the Mi.Mu Glove lies in two cited competitive advantages: cost and complexity (or lack thereof). Heap’s demo above turns the product to 11.

The Kickstarter project expects deliver of the product to backers around December of 2014, but with a project of this scale delays are certainly possible. Credit to the team behind the campaign for providing a robust analysis of risks and challenges, where they say they’ve considered 20 possible campaign outcomes and have confidence that they can deal with every scenario.

Technology is certainly set to change music forever, but did we see this coming?
