On Kickstarter: The COBURNS iPad Stand Is Exceedingly Simple, Over 3X Stated Goal

coburnsThink you need a world-changing idea to be successful in the world of crowdfunding? Think again.

The COBURNS iPad stand is not world-changing. In fact, it is ridiculously simple. The minimalist iPad stands are made of exotic hardwoods, the lighter being a Bird’s eye Maple and the darker being a South American Pau Ferro. They have small magnets on the inner walls that connect them when not in use, but don’t worry… the magnets won’t harm the iPad. A wool felt loop can be used to connect the COBURNS iPad stands to your keychain when not in use.

The stands are made in the USA by a company called Fine Grain, run by Levi Price and Eric Rea from Provo, Utah.

This is not the first time Fine Grain has successfully crowdfunded a project on Kickstarter. In the middle of last year they successfully completed a campaign for minimalist iPad cases called the Bowden and the Sheffield. The campaign netted just over their stated $20,000 goal and kicked off the Kickstarter experience for the duo.

This second campaign has raised just over $18,000 with a few days left to go. The goal this time around was just $5,000.

This is a case study for why crowdfunding is great. What VC or angel would have backed this?
