Indiegogo Campaign Crowdfunding Rooted 10″ Android Tablet

An Indiegogo campaign is seeking $185,000 to create a $169 10″ tablet computer for the masses.

The tablet promises to be based on the open-source Android platform and come with absolutely no “bloatware.” Bloatware is the software that comes on carrier-supported hardware that is specific to the carrier itself. For Verizon customers like me, an example is Verizon Tones. Generally bloatware cannot be removed from these devices.

The campaign says that the tablet runs Android 4.2, the most current version. This allows users to run the most current Android-compatible applications. Certain applications (like Twitter creator Jack Dorsey’s video app Vine) will not run on lesser versions of Android. The campaign goes on to promise frequent updates…

When Google releases new versions of Android we’ll keep updating our software so that you’re always using the latest and greatest.  There’s nothing worse than buying a new device only to find that a new version of Android is available a few months later and you’re stuck with the old version.

The campaign page suggests that the three-person team behind the device had originally been planning to launch the campaign on Kickstarter, but presumably launched on Indiegogo after being rejected from the world’s most prolific rewards-based crowdfunding platform. Kickstarter has been making a well-publicized push to be more selective when it comes to accepting hardware projects. They’re not a store, after all.
