Rob Rhinehart and his team have settled on Crowdhoster as the platform of choice for their crowdfunding campaign for Soylent. We wrote about Soylent in the past, a meal replacement drink that garnered both praise and criticism in the press.

CrowdHoster by CrowdtiltCrowdhoster is supported by Y Combinator graduate Crowdtilt, who recently received a $12 million round led by Andreesen Horowitz. Crowdhoster is based on Selfstarter, the DIY crowdfunding platform Lockitron famously leveraged to secure over $2.2 million in presales to date. Crowdtilt explains why they decided to weave the Selfstarter platform into their core strategy…

When we launched the Crowdtilt API in December, our goal was to empower anyone and everyone to take advantage of group payments. Hundreds of developers have reached out to start hacking away on cool apps—but hundreds more have reached out looking for a solution that doesn’t require hardcore coding expertise.

Enter Crowdhoster. Our aim is for you to launch your own custom crowdfunding site without having to touch a line of code. Inspired by WordPress, we turned to an open source project to serve as the backbone of the site code.

soylentThe choice means that Rhinehart will bear no responsibility in regards to platform fees. Crowdhoster is free short of unavoidable payment processing fees. When you’re hoping to raise tens of thousands of dollars a 5% platform fee can sting, and Soylent has already proven to be a worthy recipient of some mainstream press. Exposure shouldn’t be a problem for the Soylent campaign regardless of the platform.

What if you never had to worry about food again?

For many people, on many occasions, food is a hassle, especially when trying to eat well. Suppose we had a default meal that was the nutritional equivalent of water: cheap, healthy, convenient and ubiquitous. Soylent is perfectly balanced and optimized for your body and lifestyle, meaning it automatically puts you at an optimal weight, makes you feel full, and improves your focus and cognition.

The campaign is asking $65 for a week’s supply and $230 for a month’s supply of the powder used to make the beverage.
